At the moment, the website is not translatable. We're working on it.

If you want to help translating, just reply to this post. We'll let you know when it's ready.

Put down the language you want to do. So we can create a version of the website for it.

Anyone for Esperanto :) ?

Esperanto & Italian

I can translate to Esperanto, sure. That will bring in lots of people from Eastern Europe that don't use CouchSurfing so much, but rather the age-old Pasporta Servo (the Esperantist pioneer Hospex).

And I can translate into Italian, if that helps.

Content translation

Ok. It is now possible to translate the content of the website.

That means: This forum post, all the stories on the frontpage... Here is how to do it:

Between the title of a content and the actual content, there is now a little "translate" tab. You get to a page where you can choose which language you want to translate. Once you did that, you get to a "edit" page with the content in english. Slowly replace it with the content in your language. In the end, there should be no english left. Save. That's it".

Translating the menus and blocks on the right is also possible, and I'll play with it a little and come back to you with a howto.

The way it is right now is different than last year. Now any authenticated user is able to translate any content. No need to apply to be a translator, you can start right away. If you see that it is being abused, report here.

Framework translation

Ok, this part is much less important and much more complicated. Ignore at will.

If there is something that you can't see to translate, it is either because the admins of the website haven't made it translatable, either because it's part of Drupal, the framework we use.

It is possible to translate Drupal. You need to go to that page: http://hitchgathering.org/admin/build/translate/

You should find your way.

Can't find it

Sorry Sitarane, but I can't find these magic "edit" buttons and access to translating the framework on Drupal is apparently denied (at least to me). Yes, I am logged in, but when I click "translate", there is a list of the enabled languages but nothing more. No place where I can start typing. Could you be more clear to us profanes?

I'm for Russian and Ukranian.

Platschi comes this week to Moscow and I'm gonna meet him. Hope this will force the process of fixing this damn bug with translating.

Italian & Esperanto completed

Cool stuff, lads.

Italian and Esperanto are now completed. If anyone feels fluent in Esperanto, you're very welcome to review my translations and let me know about my horrible mistakes.

Let me know if you need my help to translate the framework too.

Some thoughts: Since we already have translations in Polish and Russian, I don't really think that having Esperanto as well could bring in so many people from Eastern Europe as I thought (also given the location, it's quite a challenge). But after all, I never really believed that anyone really needs a translation to Esperanto. But sure it was a lot of fun translating it. And it also suggested me some nice ideas about workshops or whatever random stuff about language democracy in a world where spontaneous, multi-national subcultures such as that behind hitchgathering aiming at bringing about no-borders issues are so successful. It's still early to organize anything but if anybody is interested, let's keep in touch.

for all the translators out here:

You will find a link to an overview page with status on what pages have been translated and which are 'outdated'.

Translate the menu items

All translators, please go to this page:
http://hitchgathering.org/admin/build/translate/table/menu

And add in your language the menu-items who, what, where, etc. It is like 2 minutes work. And don't forget to hit save when you're done :)

Wtf?

Uhm, I think there is a bug right there. I just added the translations of the menu items, but now instead of appearing in the new language, they have disappeared... and only "who", "forum" and "789" are visible now. Weird. That seems to happen with all languages except English.

Talking about translations, I also added a slogan in Esperanto. Maybe I should explain it (for some reason, talking about bugs, I couldn't publish a comment to the entry... also weird). Well actually I did explain it, but next to the slogan itself, so now slogan+explanation appear in the upper part of the website. I couldn't find the place where I could edit my entry once I had put it in (I went to "content management", but uh, it seems I am only a translator!). Perhaps some kind-hearted nerd can fix it for me? Cheers...
